Under the Fair Work Act and most modern awards, the standard overtime rate in Australia is time-and-a-half (1.5×) for the first few overtime hours per day or week, and double time (2×) for subsequent hours. Exact rates and triggers depend on the applicable modern award or enterprise agreement. Salaried employees covered by an award must have their actual overtime compensated or accounted for.
Overtime pay = overtime hours × base hourly rate × overtime multiplier. For example, 5 hours overtime at $45/hour at time-and-a-half = 5 × $45 × 1.5 = $337.50. Your effective hourly rate for the total week = (normal pay + overtime pay) ÷ total hours worked.
No — Australia does not have a separate 'overtime tax rate'. Your total gross income for the pay period (including overtime) is taxed at your normal marginal rates. However, a larger pay may push a portion of your income into a higher marginal bracket if it takes your annual income over a threshold. Your employer withholds PAYG tax based on your annualised earnings.
Employer SGC super contributions are calculated on Ordinary Time Earnings (OTE), not overtime. In most cases, overtime pay is not included in OTE — meaning your employer does not have to pay super on overtime hours under the standard SGC rules. However, some enterprise agreements or employment contracts may require super on overtime — check your specific award or agreement.
